That was the deal

When Penny found out she was having a brother and not a sister, she was pretty upset about it. Then I told her that she was welcome to dress him up however she liked until he asked her to stop.
Bingo.

last family friday!

today was penny's last family friday as a kindergartener.  we both wore our PS 321 shirts.  as we entered the building, she pointed me to go in one direction while she went in the other.  i explained to the principal that she is getting me ready for first grade, and she cracked up.

last night i had a dream that we were at this family friday and the teacher pulled me aside and said "i have to talk to you" in a tone that implied i had done something very wrong.  she was walking me to a conference room when i woke up, so i don't know what i may have done to deserve a kindergarten teacher's wrath.  i told her about it this morning, and she assured me that i was fine.

penny read me her snail study (sample page: will a snail crawl up a pencil? yes.  a snail will crawl up a pencil. i know because our snail crawled up a pencil.), a book of weekend reports, and her folder of poetry.  i sat with her in her rug spot.  the teacher played a slideshow of photos of the whole year.

i looked around the room at the volume of people that had seemed so overwhelming at the beginning of the year.  there was always at least one boy and one girl that i didn't recognize, one parent that i couldn't place with a kid, but they're all a part of my community now.  we run into each other in the neighborhood, even without our kids, and we know what's happening in each others' lives.  now that i won't be walking her in every day, this interaction will go away.  unless she's in the same class as these same kids, i won't know them.  it's just one more step toward her growing up.  no more rug spot, no more centers.  first grade.  it's on the way.  lucky for me, penny's been easing me into it.

our new normal

recently, there have been changes to both our living space, and the people who live there.

- penny now sleeps in a loft bed (she cannot remember the word "loft" and keeps calling it a "draft" bed.  she knows it's not right, and makes the most adorable face while she's saying it).  it is huge, it took hours to put together, and she LOVES it.  she asked to go home because she missed it so much.
- milo now eats as much food at each meal as i do.  he ate a hamburger for lunch.  he ate a hot dog for dinner.we have to tear everything into super tiny pieces, so it takes FOREVER for him to eat, but the speed and ferocity he puts into each bite is impressive.  also, he loves waffles
- milo crawls for real now.  he is superfast and unerringly heads for the most dangerous thing in the room.  yesterday, he entertained himself for a good 15 minutes by throwing a ball, laughing hysterically, racing over to it and throwing it again.  he was playing fetch with himself.  whatever, i got the laundry folded.
- penny has me drop her off for school right inside the main entrance.  i hardly know what to do with myself.  she's doing a great job of easing me into next year when i won't even go into the school with her at all, but i feel like i should be easing her into this stuff, not the other way around?  she's so proud, and is having so much fun being big.
- penny's got style.  she spent quite a while shopping for a dress that "goes like this" (diagonal line across her body from one shoulder to her hip).  i didn't know what that meant, she assured me it had short sleeves, and every dress i held up was wrong.  she has really amazing taste in clothes and shoes, and she TURNED DOWN TWO PAIRS OF SPARKLY PURPLE SHOES YESTERDAY.  i can't even believe this.  the ones she selected were really nice, but who is this child?

they're growing up, both of them!

Happy Mother's Day!

Besides being Mother's Day, today was Milo's Inside Out Day - the day he's been on the outside as long as he was on the inside; in his case 40 weeks and 5 days. I lifted some heavy things, drank some wine, and ate some sushi and soft cheeses, all things prohibited while pregnant, but downright encouraged on Mother's Day.
I was lucky enough to spend the day with my parents, my parents in law, and my brother in law and his family. It was a gorgeous day, and I made an effort to sit and relax.
